Ohio Democratic gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton was targeted by an armed man during a campaign appearance at the Canfield Fair near Youngstown on Sunday, September 6, 2026.
According to authorities and Acton’s campaign, the man forced his way through a crowd toward the candidate, knocking several people down in the process. Acton was not injured in the incident.
The incident happened while Acton was attending the annual Canfield Fair in Mahoning County. Witnesses said the suspect moved aggressively through a crowded area where Acton was meeting with supporters.
Suspect Was Carrying Multiple Weapons
Authorities identified the suspect as 38-year-old Patrick Havas of Canfield, Ohio.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol said Havas had a Taser and two pistols on him. Mahoning County authorities also reported that brass knuckles were recovered following his arrest. Officials said the weapons were not brandished or removed from their holsters during the incident.
Havas was quickly stopped by Acton’s security detail and taken into custody.
He was booked on charges including disorderly conduct and two counts of assault, while authorities continued investigating what led to the confrontation.
Several People Injured
Although Acton escaped unharmed, several people were injured as the suspect pushed through the crowd.
Authorities said two older adults were knocked over during the incident. Other reports said multiple volunteers and attendees were also caught up in the chaos.
Acton reportedly remained at the scene following the incident and was concerned about those who had been injured.
Political Leaders Condemn Attack
The incident has drawn condemnation from politicians across party lines.
Acton’s campaign described the incident as unacceptable and thanked law enforcement for responding quickly.
Her Republican opponent, Vivek Ramaswamy, also condemned the incident, saying candidates should be able to meet voters without facing threats or violence.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine likewise condemned the attack, adding to calls for political events to remain safe environments for candidates and members of the public.
Investigation Continues
Authorities have not yet released a full explanation of what motivated the suspect to move toward Acton.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol and Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the incident, while Havas remains in custody.
The attack comes as Ohio’s gubernatorial race between Democrat Amy Acton and Republican Vivek Ramaswamy continues to attract significant attention ahead of the election.
For Acton, the incident ended without physical harm to her, but it has once again raised concerns about security and political violence at public campaign events.
