A 32-year-old Nigerian national has been sentenced to eight years in federal prison in the United States for his role in a business email compromise scheme that defrauded two charitable organizations of $7.5 million.
The United States Department of Justice disclosed this in a statement on Friday, August 28, 2026.
U.S. District Judge Theodore Chuang sentenced Olusegun Adejorin to 96 months (eight years) in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, after he was convicted of wire fraud, aggravated identity theft, and unauthorized access to a protected computer to obtain information.
The FBI extradited Adejorin from Ghana to the United States in August 2024 to face charges in the case.
In December 2025, following a six-day trial, a federal jury found Adejorin guilty on all charges.
Kelly O. Hayes, U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland, announced the sentence alongside Jimmy Paul, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Baltimore Field Office.
According to evidence presented at trial, between June and August 2020, Adejorin carried out a scheme to defraud Victim 1, a Maryland-based charitable organization that provided investment services to other organizations.
As part of the scheme, Adejorin also defrauded Victim 2, a New York-based charitable organization, by gaining unauthorized access to employees’ email accounts and impersonating them to facilitate fraudulent financial transactions.
Adejorin registered spoofed domain names that he used to impersonate employees of Victim 2 and request withdrawals of the organization’s funds from Victim 1.
He also fraudulently gained access to email accounts belonging to Victim 1 and used them to send messages falsely confirming the fraudulent withdrawal requests made in Victim 2’s name.
The scheme ultimately resulted in the theft of approximately $7.5 million from the two charitable organizations.
