Troops of the Nigerian Army have recovered the remains of two personnel who were killed in April 2022 while travelling for their traditional wedding in Imo State, security analyst Zagazola has confirmed.
The couple, Master Warrant Officer (retd.) Linus Musa Audu and Lance Corporal Gloria Mathew, were abducted and killed by suspected IPOB/ESN elements along the Ubaha–Orsu axis of Imo State. On that day, they had set out on a journey meant to be one of the happiest moments of their lives.
They were travelling to Gloria’s hometown for their traditional wedding ceremony—an occasion intended to formally unite their families and celebrate their bond across regions and backgrounds. Linus, a retired senior non-commissioned officer, had devoted years to military service, while Gloria was still actively serving at the time.
Gloria was stationed in Sokoto, while Linus resided in Makurdi.
The couple was abducted along the Ubaha–Orsu axis and later killed by the attackers.
After nearly four years of uncertainty and sustained efforts, troops of the 82 Division, in collaboration with other security agencies, carried out a clearance and search operation on April 24, 2026, in the area where the incident occurred.
Security sources said the operation was based on recent intelligence aimed at locating the remains or possible gravesites of the deceased personnel.
During the operation, troops came under heavy fire as armed elements attempted to halt their advance, launching both an ambush and a follow-up assault.
The soldiers, however, repelled the attacks and forced the assailants to retreat.
They proceeded with an extensive search of the area and eventually discovered shallow graves believed to contain the remains of the slain personnel.
The graves were carefully excavated, and the remains recovered for forensic examination.
Military sources said efforts are underway to contact the families of the deceased for DNA verification to ensure proper identification ahead of burial.
The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment to giving the fallen personnel a befitting burial with full military honours, in recognition of their service, sacrifice, and shared dream.
