Ruben Amorim and his coaching staff could receive a staggering £15.9 million in compensation after being sacked by Manchester United last month.
Amorim, 41, was dismissed on January 5 after just 14 months in charge at Old Trafford, with his five coaches also leaving the club.
Initial reports suggested Amorim received a £10 million pay-off after being summoned to United’s Carrington training ground and dismissed by director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada.
However, a filing to the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday revealed that the cost of removing Amorim and his staff could reach up to £15.9 million. The figure represents a maximum amount, with the exact total depending on factors such as whether Amorim takes another job within a specified period.
Amorim’s compensation package brings the total cost of hiring and firing him to nearly £27 million. United paid £8.3 million to buy out his contract from Sporting Lisbon in October 2024, plus £900,000 to allow him to start early. He signed a £6.5 million-a-year deal until June 2027, meaning his pay-off for the remainder of his contract is approximately £10.05 million.
The club had already spent £14.5 million following the sacking of Erik ten Hag and the departure of sporting director Dan Ashworth. If Amorim and his staff are compensated in full, Manchester United will have spent nearly £30 million on managerial and executive departures in just 15 months.
Amorim left United the day after an explosive press conference following a 1-1 draw with Leeds, during which he openly criticised club management. He had clashed with Wilcox in a meeting three days before the trip to Elland Road.
He was initially replaced on an interim basis by Darren Fletcher before the club appointed Michael Carrick, who has won five and drawn one of his six games in charge, boosting United’s hopes of returning to European football’s top tier.
The Red Devils currently sit fourth in the Premier League, having earned the most points—18—of any team in 2026 so far. The top five in the league will secure a Champions League spot next season, with United three points ahead of sixth-placed Liverpool.
Amorim’s tenure saw only 25 wins from 63 games, a 15th-place Premier League finish, and a loss to Tottenham in the Europa League final in May.
