South Africa coach Broos: “We shut up big mouths” after World Cup win

South Africa coach Hugo Broos said his side had “shut up the big mouths” after South Africa national football team qualified for the World Cup knockout stage for the first time in their history with a 1–0 win over South Korea national football team on Wednesday.

The African side, appearing at the tournament for the fourth time, finished second in Group A behind co-hosts Mexico national football team, who recorded a perfect run of three wins from three matches. South Africa, last seen at the World Cup when they hosted in 2010, were widely dismissed after losing 2–0 to Mexico in their opening game.

However, they recovered with a draw against the Czech Republic national football team before securing a decisive win in Monterrey, with Thapelo Maseko scoring the second-half winner.

Broos said the result was a response to critics who had doubted the team’s direction.

He also described the achievement as a deeply emotional milestone in his coaching career, hinting it could be among his final major tournaments.

“Between me and the players there is something special. I’m not just a coach to them; I share a strong bond with them,” he said, adding that the team spirit had been key to their success.

The Belgian coach, who has led the team since 2021, maintained that belief in his squad never wavered despite external criticism.

South Africa now face co-hosts Canada men’s national soccer team in Los Angeles on Sunday, with a place in the last 16 at stake.

Broos said his players would be ready for the challenge, stressing their determination to keep making history and prove they belong at the highest level.
