A total of 67 Nigerians repatriated from South Africa have arrived at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos.
The returnees arrived aboard a South African Airways flight on Wednesday night, August 26, and were received by officials from several Federal Government agencies, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons.
The latest repatriation brings to 150 the number of Nigerians returned from South Africa with the assistance of the philanthropic group, following the earlier return of 83 Nigerians.
Speaking to the returnees, representatives of the group, Ikem Ume-Ezeoke and Chief Charles Mba, welcomed them back to Nigeria and presented each returnee with N50,000 in immediate financial assistance.
The South-West Coordinator of NEMA, Alex Oturu, said the return of the latest batch was facilitated by good-spirited Nigerians who provided financial assistance for their flight tickets and other needs amid xenophobic challenges in South Africa.
The development follows the return of 83 Nigerians from South Africa last Thursday.
According to an AFP tally based on figures provided by African countries that have repatriated their nationals, more than 176,000 people have left South Africa in recent weeks.
At least four migrants have been killed in the violence, according to South African police, although some foreign governments have reported a higher death toll.
