Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has suggested that the long-standing political clash between former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar could persist for many years, possibly until the death of either of the two prominent Nigerian politicians.
Sani, in a post shared on X on Saturday, August 1, described the decades-long disagreement between the two leaders as one of Nigeria’s most enduring political rivalries. He noted that the dispute, which began when many young Nigerians were still children, has continued despite the passage of time and changing political seasons.
According to the former lawmaker, Atiku has faced a series of strong criticisms from Obasanjo since the former vice president launched what he described as a major attack against his former boss years ago.
Sani wrote that the rivalry between the two figures had lasted for more than two decades and joked that it could continue until one of them is no longer alive, after which the surviving politician would likely pay tribute to the other.
The renewed tension between Obasanjo and Atiku followed comments by the former president, who recently described his decision to choose Atiku as his running mate in the 1999 presidential election as his biggest mistake while in office.
Atiku, who has remained a major figure in Nigerian politics, has also continued to criticize aspects of Obasanjo’s leadership while revisiting unresolved issues from their time working together.
The relationship between the two former allies has evolved from a historic political partnership into one of Nigeria’s most closely watched political disagreements.
