Anambra police thwart alleged attempt by 21-year-old mother to sell newborn baby

Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command attached to the Oyi Divisional Headquarters on Friday, June 19, foiled an alleged attempt by a 21-year-old woman to sell her newborn baby.

The police intervention followed a report from a concerned resident, prompting officers to visit a location in Igbariam, where they found the young mother and her newborn.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the woman had concealed both her pregnancy and the birth of the child from her parents. It was further gathered that she had left her family home in Imo State and sought refuge with a friend in Igbariam before the alleged plan was uncovered.

During the operation, police officers immediately contacted the woman’s parents, who responded promptly. Upon their arrival, the mother and baby were reunited with the family to ensure they received adequate care, supervision, and emotional support while investigations continue.

The police said investigations into the incident are ongoing.
