Former Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos has explained why Cristiano Ronaldo continues to start for Portugal at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
At 41, Ronaldo led Portugal’s attack in their 1-1 draw against DR Congo on Wednesday, June 17.
The Al-Nassr forward played the full 90 minutes but struggled to make a significant impact as Roberto Martinez’s side was held to a surprise draw. Ronaldo recorded just 25 touches throughout the match, with only five coming inside the opposition’s penalty area.
Kroos, who spent four seasons playing alongside Ronaldo at Real Madrid, insisted the five-time Ballon d’Or winner is still starting because he remains Portugal’s best option in attack, not simply because of his legendary status.
“Ronaldo is not just playing because his name is Cristiano Ronaldo; it’s because he’s still their best attacker in the box,” the former Germany international said, according to Madrid Xtra.
With the appearance, Ronaldo extended his record as the most-capped men’s international footballer, earning his 229th cap for Portugal over a 23-year international career. He also remains the all-time leading scorer in men’s international football with 143 goals for his country.
