Armed police were called to an address on Hardale Grove, Redcar, shortly after 1:30 p.m. on April 9 following reports of concern for a child. By the time officers arrived, the baby had already died. Police said the death is believed to have been caused by a dog bite.

Neighbours reported being asked to stay indoors while police dealt with the situation. One dog from the property was shot by officers outside, while another was secured.

A 31-year-old woman sustained an arm injury and was taken to hospital for treatment.

A 45-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of being in charge of a dog dangerously out of control, causing injury resulting in death. He was later released on bail after questioning.

Chief Superintendent Rachel Stockdale said: “Our thoughts remain with the child’s family following this tragic and distressing incident.

“I would like to ask that their privacy is respected during this extremely difficult time.

“There will continue to be a police presence at the property as the investigation remains ongoing.

“I encourage anyone with concerns to speak to an officer.

“We are also appealing to anyone with information, including mobile, doorbell or dashcam footage, to come forward.”
