The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested and identified a suspect linked to the recent attack on Peter Obi in Benin City.
On Tuesday, February 24, Yunusa Tanko, national coordinator of the Obidient movement, reported that Obi and several chieftains of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) were attacked at the residence of John Odigie-Oyegun, a senior party official.
Olumide Akpata, Labour Party (LP) candidate in the 2024 Edo governorship election, stated that his cousin was injured during the attack, with his head allegedly struck with a bottle.
Following the incident, a man named Udeme Stephen reportedly claimed responsibility on his X account, @stevetom788, threatening further violence against Obi. In the post, Stephen wrote that Obi was “lucky” to have survived the Benin attack and warned that he would not be spared during future visits, including a planned trip to Rivers State.
He added:
“We warned Obi against his entrance into Edo State, but he mistook our resolves for obidiots online noise. Thank his stars he survived this one. I learnt he’s going to my Rivers State. No wahala. Na my MEN go handle that one, and dem no dey miss target. Speak no peace to a bastard and wish him no long life, for he’s destined to die one.”
According to a security source, DSS operatives immediately launched a covert investigation, using forensic tools to trace the suspect. The 26-year-old man was located in Rivers State, where he works as a teacher at Jessica High School in Eliozu, Obio-Akpor LGA.
The source stated:
“The outcome of the agency’s forensic investigations implicated the suspect. As a responsible security organisation tasked with counter-espionage and VIP protection, the DSS acts on credible intelligence, irrespective of tribe or religion. Operatives were swiftly deployed, and the man who threatened Peter Obi was apprehended and is now in custody.”
The source added that the suspect is expected to face charges in court soon.
