R&B singer Trey Songz is taking legal action against police officers over his arrest at the 2021 AFC Championship game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills.
Songz, whose real name is Tremaine Neverson, filed a lawsuit on Thursday, January 22, against the Kansas City Police Department (KCPD), claiming negligence related to his arrest following an altercation in the stands at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in January 2021.
At the time, police alleged that Songz became violent with officers after failing to comply with stadium rules. He was jailed overnight and investigated but was never formally charged, with prosecutors citing insufficient evidence.
In the lawsuit, Songz claims he was actually the victim, subjected to heckling, threats, and harassment by other football fans. He alleges that KCPD officers, along with private security contractor Whelan Event Services and stadium sponsor GEHA (Government Employees Health Association), failed to protect him.
“Instead of exercising their professional duty to intervene and protect plaintiff Tremaine A. Neverson, an invitee to GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, the defendants Whelan Event Services and defendant KCPD physically assaulted, wrongfully arrested, handcuffed and detained Plaintiff Tremaine A. Neverson in jail,” the lawsuit states.
Songz is seeking unspecified financial damages for what he describes as “serious, permanent and progressive injuries to his person and professional reputation.”
