Nigeria’s national grid experienced its first collapse of the year on Friday, January 23, according to the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO). Power generation reportedly dropped to zero megawatts (MW), leaving the entire country without electricity.
NISO data indicated that load allocation to all 11 electricity distribution companies (DisCos) fell to zero MW as of 1 p.m. Friday. The affected DisCos include Benin, Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Abuja, and Yola.
The collapse follows a pattern from 2025, when the national grid experienced multiple failures, with the last recorded incident occurring on December 29.
This latest outage underscores ongoing challenges in Nigeria’s power sector and raises concerns about grid stability as the country enters 2026.
