FIFA President Gianni Infantino has condemned the “unacceptable” conduct of Senegal players and coaching staff following the dramatic conclusion of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final.
Speaking after the match, Infantino said:
“Violence and walk-offs have no place in football.”
Senegal clinched the title with a 1-0 victory over hosts Morocco, courtesy of Pape Gueye’s extra-time goal. However, the win was marred by controversy when a disputed late penalty led Senegal players to temporarily abandon the pitch, sparking tense moments around match officials.
After a 15-minute delay, the players returned, and Morocco’s Brahim Diaz saw his ‘Panenka’ penalty saved by Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, sending the game into extra time. Gueye’s goal ultimately sealed the victory for Senegal.
While congratulating Senegal on their win, Infantino criticized the behavior of players and staff during the final minutes of regulation:
“We also witnessed unacceptable scenes on the field and in the stands. We strongly condemn the behaviour of some supporters as well as some Senegalese players and technical staff members. It is unacceptable to leave the field of play in this manner, and violence cannot be tolerated in our sport—it is simply not right.”
The FIFA chief emphasized the importance of respecting officials’ decisions, warning that undermining referees “puts the very essence of football at risk.”
