The Federal Government has officially opened applications for the 2026 Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) Overseas Scholarship Scheme, offering Nigerian postgraduate students the chance to pursue MSc and PhD studies in countries including the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Malaysia.
The announcement was made on Monday, January 19, via X (formerly Twitter) by Dada Olusegun, the Special Adviser to the President on Social Media.
“FG has announced the commencement of applications for 2026 Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) Scholarships overseas,” the post stated.
The scholarship programme targets candidates in disciplines relevant to the oil and gas sector. Selected beneficiaries will enjoy full support, covering tuition fees, accommodation, return air tickets, living allowances, health insurance, and bench fees where applicable.
“The 2026 Overseas MSc and PhD Scholarships provide access to world-class training, research facilities, and global expertise, while developing indigenous capacity in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector,” the PTDF said.
For PhD candidates studying in the UK, the programme will follow a split-site model, allowing scholars to conduct research both at the College of Petroleum and Energy Studies, Kaduna (CPESK) and at partner universities such as Robert Gordon University, the University of Strathclyde, and the University of Portsmouth.
The PTDF emphasized that the programme is highly competitive. Only candidates demonstrating exceptional merit, strong academic records, and research relevance to Nigeria’s oil and gas industry will be considered. Selection criteria include academic performance, quality of research proposals, professional memberships, and the alignment of proposed studies with national industry needs.
Eligibility requirements include:
- MSc applicants: A minimum of Second Class Lower (2.2) or Second Class Upper (2.1) in their first degree, completion of the NYSC programme, computer literacy, and at least five O’Level credits including English and Mathematics.
- PhD applicants: All MSc requirements plus a research proposal (maximum five pages) detailing objectives, methodology, and data collection plans.
Applicants must ensure their National Identity Number (NIN) is verified, and submission of multiple or falsified documents will result in automatic disqualification.
Applications are to be submitted online via scholarship.ptdf.gov.ng for programmes approved at PTDF partner institutions. The deadline for submission is February 27, 2026.
