Diane Keaton, the Oscar-winning actress known for her roles in The Godfather and Annie Hall, has died at the age of 79.
She passed away on Saturday, October 11, in California. The Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed they responded to her home at 8:08 a.m. local time and transported a 79-year-old woman to a nearby hospital.
Keaton rose to fame in the 1970s with her performance as Kay Adams in The Godfather series and through her collaborations with director Woody Allen. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in Annie Hall (1977).
Her career spanned decades and included films such as The First Wives Club, Something’s Gotta Give, Baby Boom, and the Book Club series. In 2021, she appeared in Justin Bieber’s music video for “Ghost.”
Born Diane Hall in Los Angeles in 1946, she was the eldest of four children. She adopted her mother’s maiden name, Keaton, for professional use because there was already a Diane Hall registered with Actors’ Equity.
Keaton never married and adopted two children — daughter Dexter in 1996 and son Duke in 2001. She was known for her views on independence and often spoke about choosing not to follow traditional paths in relationships or motherhood.
She is survived by her two children.
