The Ebonyi State Police Command has arrested a middle-aged man, Chukwuma Onwe, a native of Nwezenyi-Igbeagu in Izzi Local Government Area of the state, for allegedly selling his five-day-old baby boy for N1.5 million.

Confirming the arrest to journalists, the spokesperson of the command, SP Joshua Ukandu, said the baby was recovered from the buyer, Chinyere Ugochukwu. He disclosed that both the father and the buyer were apprehended on Friday at the Azugwu area of Abakaliki Local Government Area.

“Mr. Chukwuma Onwe, a native of Nwezenyi-Igbeagu community in Izzi LGA, sold his five-day-old son for N1.5 million to Mrs. Chinyere Ugochukwu. Onwe has been arrested and is currently in our custody,” Ukandu stated.

He further revealed that Onwe had taken the child from his wife, Mrs. Philomena Iroko, under the pretext of taking him for medical care but instead sold him to the buyer.
“He lied to his wife that he handed the baby over to his sister for further care,” Ukandu added.

The police spokesperson said investigations were ongoing, noting that the child had been safely reunited with his biological mother.
