The Management of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has announced a ban on all social activities on campus that extend beyond 6 p.m.
The directive was contained in a statement signed by Mr. Inya Egwu, the Acting Public Relations Officer of the university.
According to the statement, the decision followed the tragic incident of September 12, when a businessman, Chiebonam Nweze, popularly known as Power-Autos, was stabbed to death during a bonfire night organized by the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies’ students’ association.
“Henceforth, the UNN management has directed that all such activities must be held strictly during the daytime and under the supervision of the University Security Unit,” the statement read.
“Social events of any kind will not be permitted on our campuses beyond 6:00 p.m.”
The management described the incident as regrettable, noting that the bonfire event was hijacked by miscreants from a neighbouring community who instigated violence.
It further assured students, staff, and the public that the university remains committed to maintaining a safe and secure environment and will continue to take all necessary measures to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
