U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that a possible suspect in the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk is in custody.
Speaking on Fox News’s morning show Fox & Friends on Friday, the 79-year-old Republican leader said there had been “a big update” in the case. Asked about developments, Trump replied: “I think with a high degree of certainty we have him in custody.”
According to BBC News, Trump said he learned of the development “five minutes before” going on air and that “someone very close” to the suspect had turned him in. He added that more details could be released later today.
Authorities have yet to confirm the arrest and have not disclosed the suspect’s identity.
Trump praised law enforcement for “doing a great job” and “working together,” adding: “It all worked out.” He also said he hoped Kirk’s killer would face the death penalty.
Kirk, a married father of two, was shot once in the neck while speaking about mass shootings at a university campus in Utah on Thursday. A manhunt for the gunman had been underway at the time of Trump’s remarks.
