An elderly passenger was removed from a Nigerian aircraft on Tuesday, August 27, after allegedly threatening to sl@p a flight attendant who attempted to reassign his seat near the emergency exit.
The spokesperson for the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Michael Achimugu, confirmed the incident in a statement shared online. According to him, the passenger refused to comply despite being informed of the safety regulations requiring the seat change.
“He threatened the hostess twice. The pilot subsequently called in airport security, including the Air Force, to have him removed,” Achimugu stated.
The passenger reportedly requested to speak with NCAA Consumer Protection Officers, who intervened and helped deescalate the situation. After being cautioned about his behavior and its implications, he apologized and was escorted back to the terminal.
“The pilot maintained that he would not operate the flight with the passenger on board due to safety concerns. The individual has since calmed down and will be allowed to board an evening flight,” Achimugu added.
He further stressed that threatening airline crew members is unacceptable and urged passengers to report service complaints to the NCAA Consumer Protection Department rather than resorting to aggression.
“Threats of violence against cabin crew are not acceptable. Let us all ensure to keep our skies safe and allow other passengers to enjoy their flying experience,” he concluded.
