Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have killed seven mourners and injured several others in an attack on Kopl village, located in Chibok Local Government Area of Borno State.
The Chairman of Chibok LGA, Modu Mustapha, confirmed the incident, stating that the assault took place around 6 p.m. on Monday, April 28, 2025.
The attack occurred just hours after another deadly incident in which passengers—including women and children—were killed along the Rann-Gamboru Ngala road in Kala Balge LGA.
Mustapha said the insurgents launched the attack during the final day of a mourning ceremony, opening fire on villagers gathered for funeral prayers.
“They gathered for the funeral prayer when insurgents descended on them. We evacuated many who sustained bullet wounds to Mubi General Hospital in nearby Adamawa State,” he said.
“The number of fatalities may be higher than seven, as some people fled into the bush with gunshot wounds. Search and rescue operations are ongoing to assist those still missing.”
Senator Ali Ndume (APC, Borno South) also condemned the continued violence, describing the situation as “beyond human imagination.”
“On Sunday, I received a distress call that over 10 members of vigilante groups were killed in a community between Hawul Local Government Area in Borno and Garkida town in Adamawa,” he said.
“My people are suffering severe casualties with no direct confrontation. In the past month alone, over 100 people have been killed in several coordinated attacks across Sabon Gari, Izge, Kirawa, Pulka, Damboa, Chibok, Askira Uba, and other areas.”
