In a statement released on Thursday, April 24, MTN announced it had detected unauthorized activity within its network systems and acted swiftly to isolate and contain the breach.

Chief Executive Officer Karl Toriola said initial investigations revealed that while the attackers attempted to disrupt services, they were unsuccessful in compromising critical systems, including customer data and core operations. “We take cybersecurity very seriously and have robust systems in place to detect, isolate, and neutralize threats,” Toriola said. “Although this attack attempted to breach our defenses, our security protocols worked as intended, and our core infrastructure remains secure.”

Although the company did not disclose the nature or source of the breach, cybersecurity analysts cite the rising threat landscape facing African telecoms, driven by rapid digital adoption and a growing user base. A source within MTN confirmed that Nigerian operations were unaffected, underscoring the resilience of the local network.

The incident comes amid Nigeria’s ongoing digital transformation, which places increased cybersecurity demands on service providers. MTN said it is working with cybersecurity experts and authorities to investigate the breach and enhance its defenses against future threats.
