The Federal Government has indicated a need for N18.6 trillion to address the road sector over the next four years. The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, disclosed this during the budget defense session for a total supplementary budget of N2.1 trillion before the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations, which is chaired by Abubakar Bichi.
The minister emphasized:
“To comprehensively address our road sector over the next four years, we require approximately N18.6 trillion. Therefore, it is imperative for the National Assembly to devise effective strategies to tackle the pressing issues in our road infrastructure.
I also appeal to the National Assembly to ensure that the Executive branch respects your directives on specific interventions. We must establish a contingency fund for situations where immediate action is necessary.
When you request interventions on roads that have deteriorated to the point of resembling a patient on life support, it becomes evident that urgent measures are needed. Such emergencies disrupt transportation, causing considerable hardships. We, therefore, urge the allocation of contingency funds to facilitate prompt responses to these critical situations.”
