Cristiano Ronaldo’s International Career Likely Over, Says Sister

Cristiano Ronaldo’s sister, Katia Aveiro, has hinted that her brother’s international career could be nearing its end following his suspension by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) amid a reported fallout with Portugal coach Jorge Jesus.

The 41-year-old forward sparked controversy during the recent international break after leaving Portugal’s camp over what he described as “broken promises” by Jesus.

The dispute reportedly escalated after Ronaldo was left on the bench during Portugal’s 2-1 Nations League victory over Norway. Following the incident, the Portuguese Football Federation suspended the Al-Nassr star pending an investigation into his conduct.

Speaking at a book launch in Lisbon, which was also attended by Jesus, Aveiro addressed the controversy and shared her thoughts on her brother’s international future.

“It’s more likely a no than a yes,” she said when asked whether Ronaldo would continue playing for Portugal.

“I think both [Cristiano and Jorge Jesus] are hurt. It was a situation they experienced, not me. I’m speaking for my brother.

“I think it’s a situation that’s stalled. We’ll see what happens.”

When asked whether Ronaldo and Jesus could reconcile, Aveiro admitted that the situation remained complicated.

“I don’t know, it’s very complicated. When we’re betrayed, it’s very difficult to go back to normal,” she added.

Reflecting on the controversy, she expressed sadness over the way her brother had been treated, criticising what she perceived as a lack of appreciation from the Portuguese public.

“My feeling is one of sadness because the Portuguese people unfortunately forget what has already been done and think that things should be done differently now.

“I’m speechless. It’s very difficult to see my brother go through this. He is one of the people who least deserve this.”

Aveiro’s comments come after Ronaldo’s mother, Dolores Aveiro, also criticised the situation, insisting that her son was not being given the recognition he deserved.

“They are not valuing her son,” she reportedly said, before adding: “He could have left through the front door and instead he left through the back door.”

Despite apologising to his teammates, Ronaldo remains under scrutiny as the investigation into his conduct continues. The suspension could also force him to miss the entire November international break.

In a statement released last week, the Portuguese Football Federation confirmed that disciplinary proceedings had been initiated against the forward.

“Disciplinary proceedings were initiated against Cristiano Ronaldo pursuant to a decision by the Non-Professional Section dated October 9, 2026, aimed at determining whether the events reported on October 7, 2026, warrant disciplinary action.

“Without prejudice to the automatic preventive suspension to which he was subject prior to the initiation of proceedings, a non-automatic preventive suspension of the player was ordered, and the case was designated as urgent.

“The case was referred to the FPF Disciplinary Investigation Committee on October 10, 2026, with the proceedings remaining confidential until the conclusion of the investigation.”

With the investigation ongoing and tensions reportedly still unresolved, uncertainty remains over Ronaldo’s future with the Portuguese national team. His sister’s latest comments have added to speculation that one of football’s most celebrated international careers could be approaching its conclusion.
