23-Year-Old Accounting Student Sentenced to Death for Blasphemy

An Iranian woman has reportedly been sentenced to death on blasphemy charges over a social media post deemed insulting to the Prophet, sparking renewed concerns over human rights and freedom of expression in Iran.

Najmeh Amini, a 23-year-old accounting student, was reportedly handed the death sentence last month after spending eight months in Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad, a facility known for holding prisoners facing serious criminal charges.

According to Mail Online, Amini had previously faced charges including “insulting the Supreme Leader” and “clashing with security agents.”

However, Iranian human rights activists have now revealed that she was sentenced to death on a charge known as sab ol-nabi, which translates to “insulting the Prophet.”

In addition to the death sentence, Amini reportedly received a prison term of 12 years, six months and one day on charges of acting against national security and spreading anti-regime propaganda.

Amini was arrested on January 31 after joining hundreds of thousands of Iranians who took to the streets to protest against the country’s authoritarian government.

Her reported death sentence has raised further concerns among human rights advocates over the treatment of protesters and the use of capital punishment in cases involving alleged blasphemy.

Following her sentencing, a leaked voice recording said to have been made inside the prison emerged, in which Amini made an emotional appeal for help and urged the public not to forget her case.

In the recording, Amini identifies herself as a prisoner at Mashhad Central Prison and says she recorded the message on September 18, 2026.

“Greetings to the people of Iran. I am Najmeh Amini, 23 years old, speaking from the central prison of Mashhad. I am leaving this message for you on 18 September 2026,” she is heard saying.

“I am not trying to make a hero out of myself today; I only ask one thing: be my voice. I am an innocent girl, a young person with so many hopes and dreams. I have parents who are waiting for me—a family that wakes up every morning fearing my loss.”

Amini also expressed fears that her story could be forgotten if her case attracted only brief public attention.

“I do not want the last remaining trace of me to be a few lines in a case file.

“If my voice reaches outside the prison, please do not listen to it for just a moment and then forget it!”

In her emotional message, Amini called for justice and urged legal professionals, human rights advocates and international organisations to examine her case.

“People, I only want justice and the opportunity to defend myself. I request that lawyers, legal scholars, human rights activists, and everyone who hears the voices of innocent people review my case file.

“I request that international human rights organisations and responsible bodies at the United Nations hear my voice and investigate and follow up on the status of my case.”

She ended the recording with a poignant appeal for people to remember her and a plea to witness a better future for her country.

“Remember my name; I may not be able to speak again. But as long as I am alive, I hold one hope: that before the rope marks the end of my life, I see my prosperous and free Iran,” she added.

Amini’s reported case has drawn attention to the serious consequences that individuals may face when accused of blasphemy or offences against national security in Iran.

Her appeal also highlights the fears of prisoners facing the death penalty and the importance of calls for a fair legal process, access to legal representation and independent scrutiny of allegations of human rights abuses.
