Petrol imports into Nigeria fell significantly in August as domestic supply from the Dangote Petroleum Refinery increased, according to the latest data from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).
The refinery ended August with 630.9 million litres of refined petroleum products in stock. The inventory included 360.4 million litres of petrol, 137.2 million litres of diesel and 133.3 million litres of aviation fuel.
Petrol imports drop by 26%
According to the NMDPRA’s August 2026 sector report, average daily petrol imports declined by 26 per cent, from 19.7 million litres per day in July to 14.6 million litres per day in August.
At the same time, domestic petrol receipts increased by 39 per cent, rising from 25.8 million litres per day in July to 35.9 million litres per day in August.
This meant that domestic petrol supply exceeded imports by 21.3 million litres per day during the month.
Dangote refinery supplies major share of petrol
The Dangote refinery accounted for about 71 per cent of Nigeria’s total petrol receipts in August, supplying almost 36 million litres of petrol to the domestic market daily.
The refinery produced an average of 41.94 million litres of petrol per day, supplied 35.87 million litres to the Nigerian market and exported 9.73 million litres daily, according to the regulator.
The refinery’s average capacity utilisation was also reported at 105.21 per cent during August.
Diesel imports also decline
The decline was not limited to petrol. Diesel imports fell by 84 per cent, from 7.9 million litres per day in July to 1.3 million litres per day in August.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s overall petrol receipts increased by 11 per cent, from 45.5 million litres per day in July to 50.5 million litres per day in August.
Petrol consumption falls
Despite the increase in total supply, recorded petrol consumption fell by 14 per cent, from 48.3 million litres per day in July to 41.5 million litres per day in August.
The NMDPRA said its consumption figures were based on volumes trucked into the domestic market.
The latest figures show the growing role of domestic refining in Nigeria’s petroleum supply, although imported petrol continues to enter the market.
