Singer Peter Okoye, popularly known as Mr P and a member of the defunct music duo P-Square, has told a Federal High Court in Lagos that he received more than $800,000 in royalties from the group’s musical works but did not give any portion of the money to his elder brother, Jude Okoye.
Peter made the disclosure while testifying virtually before Justice Alexander Owoeye during the ongoing legal proceedings involving Jude Okoye and his company, Northside Music Limited.
According to reports from the court proceedings, Peter was questioned by Clement Onwuewunor, SAN, counsel to Jude, about royalties paid through the French music rights organisation Société des Auteurs, Compositeurs et Éditeurs de Musique (SACEM).
Peter reportedly acknowledged receiving approximately $800,000 from SACEM between 2016 and 2026. However, he maintained that the money belonged to him and his twin brother, Paul Okoye, as the artistes behind P-Square.
When asked whether he informed Jude about the payments, Peter reportedly responded that he did not, maintaining that “the money was for the artists.”
Peter Disputes Jude’s Entitlement
The singer also disputed Jude’s entitlement to the SACEM royalties, despite acknowledging that Jude had signed the SACEM agreement.
Peter reportedly maintained that the agreement was signed on behalf of “the team” and insisted that Jude was not a member of P-Square.
He also confirmed that the royalties were connected to about 10 P-Square songs.
However, Peter acknowledged that he had previously paid Jude a quarter of his SACEM share. He disputed the claim that Jude continued to be entitled to quarterly payments after their reconciliation in 2022.
Dispute Over Royalty Records
The court also heard arguments concerning P-Square’s backend royalty records.
Peter had previously claimed that Jude took more than three months to provide royalty records he requested in 2022. Jude’s counsel, however, told the court that the request was made on October 16, 2022, and that the records were provided six days later.
When Peter was asked to produce a message or document showing that he had requested the records before October 16, he reportedly admitted that he could not do so and could not recall.
Peter confirmed that he eventually received the royalty report from Jude. The records reportedly covered royalties from 2016 to 2022, including information relating to Lex Records.
He explained that the records were requested because some parties were interested in purchasing the P-Square music catalogue.
Jude’s Ongoing Court Case
The royalty dispute is unfolding alongside the criminal case involving Jude Okoye and Northside Music Limited.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is prosecuting Jude and his company over allegations involving N1.3 billion and $1 million. Jude has pleaded not guilty to the charges, meaning the allegations remain allegations and have not been established as proven facts by the court.
Peter also told the court that he had no individual employment contract with Jude as P-Square’s manager, saying their management arrangement operated through Northside Entertainment Limited.
The long-running dispute continues to shed light on the financial and management disagreements surrounding P-Square and the brothers.
Further hearing in the case has been adjourned to December 8 and 9, 2026.
