Football legend Ronald Koeman has announced the death of his beloved wife, Bartina, following her battle with breast cancer at the age of 65.
The former Netherlands and Barcelona manager, who had been married to Bartina for 41 years, shared the heartbreaking news in an emotional Instagram post.
Alongside a black-and-white photograph of the couple looking into each other’s eyes while holding hands, Koeman, 63, wrote:
“With intense sadness, but also with great pride and love, we say goodbye to my beautiful wife, our dearest mom and grandma.”
Koeman, who established himself as a football legend during a decorated playing career with Barcelona, Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord, married Bartina in 1985.
The couple had three children and four grandchildren together during their long marriage.
Bartina was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010 and later faced the disease again in 2018. She was re-diagnosed in 2023, around the time Koeman began his second spell in charge of the Netherlands national team.
She continued to receive treatment, with Koeman previously revealing that metastases had been detected.
When Koeman stepped down from his role as Netherlands manager, he made a point of thanking his wife for her unwavering support throughout his time in charge.
“My wife Bartina supported and encouraged me every day, despite her own illness, to finish my work as national coach,” he said.
“That is a testament to incredible strength. I am more grateful to her for that than I will ever be able to put into words.”
Following the announcement of Bartina’s death, Koeman has received an outpouring of support, with friends, former teammates and football figures sharing their condolences on social media.
Legendary goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar was among those to pay tribute, writing:
“My deepest condolences and wishing you all much strength together as a family.”
