Three persons have lost their lives while four others sustained serious injuries in a tragic lone road crash along the Nnobi–Agulu–Awka Road in Anambra State.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra State Sector Command, confirmed that the fatal accident occurred at about 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 17, 2026, near St. Jude Anglican Church, Adazi-Ani.
According to the FRSC, the crash involved a Mercedes-Benz 608 commercial truck with registration number XB270NNL.
Preliminary findings revealed that the truck developed a mechanical fault before catching fire, causing the driver to lose control. The vehicle reportedly crashed into a roadside barricade, somersaulted, and became engulfed in flames, trapping some of the occupants.
In a statement issued by the Sector Public Education Officer, SRC Margaret B. Onabe, the FRSC disclosed that seven male occupants were involved in the crash. Three victims died at the scene, while four others suffered serious injuries and were rescued.
The statement added that FRSC rescue personnel responded promptly after receiving a distress call at about 10:35 a.m. Officers immediately managed traffic, diverted vehicles to the opposite lane, and coordinated the removal of the burnt truck to restore the free flow of traffic.
Reacting to the incident, the Sector Commander of the FRSC in Anambra State, Corps Commander Bridget Asekhauno, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
She reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to rapid emergency response and road safety enforcement, while urging motorists, particularly commercial vehicle operators, to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on any journey.
Asekhauno also advised drivers to carry out regular vehicle maintenance and avoid transporting flammable materials under unsafe conditions, stressing that proper maintenance remains one of the most effective ways to prevent avoidable road crashes.
