2027: Kwankwaso Will Be My Partner, Not a Spare Tyre – Peter Obi

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 election, has said his administration would ensure that the office of the Vice President plays an active role in governance rather than serving as a ceremonial position.

Obi made the statement on Saturday while accepting his affirmation as the party’s presidential candidate and announcing Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election.

In a post on his X handle, Obi pledged to uphold the rule of law, strengthen democratic institutions, and ensure transparency in governance if elected president.

According to him, adherence to the rule of law would be strictly enforced for both public officials and citizens in line with constitutional provisions.

“The rule of law will be fiercely upheld, and adherence to it will be sacrosanct for both government officials and citizens alike, strictly in accordance with our constitutional frameworks,” he said.

Obi also promised to promote a democratic system that respects opposition parties and encourages inclusive governance.

“Our democracy will exemplify true governance of the people, by the people, and for the people, completely free from interference by the ruling party. Instead, we will institutionalise deep respect for opposition parties and foster constructive engagement in governance,” he said.

“Under my leadership, democracy will be pursued with integrity, fairness, and transparency.”

Speaking on the role of his running mate, Obi said the Vice President would be a meaningful partner in governance.

“I will make democracy work, and the Vice President will be a partner, not a spare tyre,” he said while announcing Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate.

Obi expressed confidence that their partnership would advance his vision of national renewal, improved governance, and economic transformation.
