All access roads leading to the A-Class Event Centre in Abuja were barricaded by police on Saturday ahead of a proposed special convention reportedly organised by members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyal to Tanimu Turaki.
According to Channels Television, the event, which was said to be linked to the ratification of former President Goodluck Jonathan as the party’s presidential candidate, was scheduled to take place in Wuse 2, Abuja.
Police reportedly deployed several vans to block access routes from both the Wuse and Maitama axes, effectively preventing party members and other road users from entering the venue.
The development comes amid growing tensions within the PDP following reports that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, warned hotels and event centres against hosting what he described as unauthorised political gatherings in the capital.
The PDP has accused Wike of attempting to frustrate the planned convention, alleging that pressure was mounted on the management of the event centre to cancel the booking despite full payment and compliance with all necessary requirements.
The party said it had secured the venue and notified relevant security agencies about the convention, which was scheduled to hold on Saturday, May 30, 2026.
“We are certain that Nigeria is a country governed by law, and any attempt to use force to suppress political dissent and opposition is an aberration which must be resisted by all people of good conscience,” the party said in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong.
The PDP further stated that its legal team had been directed to enforce the agreement with the event centre and ensure that the event proceeds as planned despite what it described as acts of intimidation.
