Emy Kaybaba, brother of late singer Ifunanya Nwangene, has recounted the harrowing events that led to his sister’s death.

According to Kaybaba, Nanyah called him at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 31, explaining that she had been asleep when she suddenly felt pain and discovered a snake in her room. She immediately tied a tourniquet to prevent the venom from spreading and told him she was heading to the hospital. He stayed on the phone with her throughout.

The first hospital in Lugbe, Abuja, reportedly told her they did not have anti-venom. She was then taken to another hospital, where the staff removed the tourniquet against her protests and began administering a drip.

Kaybaba said his sister complained about the removal of the tourniquet, but the hospital staff told her to calm down. Shortly after, he noticed that her speech was becoming unclear, prompting him to end the call just as an uncle arrived at the hospital. Her condition rapidly worsened, and she passed away a few minutes later.

In the wake of the tragedy, Kaybaba accused the hospital of negligence. He said the facility later claimed that Nanyah was not speaking clearly upon arrival—a statement he strongly refuted. He emphasized that she came into the hospital on her own and had been speaking clearly to him on the phone, even recording a video showing the hospital administering the drip, which he shared publicly.

Kaybaba’s account paints a devastating picture of a young life lost and raises serious questions about the response and handling of snake bite emergencies in the city.
