The Enugu State Police Command has arraigned two male suspects, Ezema Onyedikachi (27) and Ugwu Chigozie Anthony (21), over the alleged st@bbing and m#rder of Nweze Chiebonam (29) during a bonfire night event at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). The suspects were charged to court and remanded in correctional custody.

They are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and m#rder.

The incident occurred during a bonfire organized by the Faculty of Arts, Department of Archaeology/Heritage Studies, on September 12, 2025. The event was attended by students, invited guests, and the suspects. At about 3 a.m. the following day, while attendees were leaving the venue, Ugwu Anthony’s car reportedly hit the deceased’s car, sparking a fight between both parties. The scuffle was later settled.

Police investigations, however, revealed that the suspects left the venue only to return later with a dagger. During the assault, Ezema Onyedikachi allegedly collected the dagger from Ugwu Anthony and stabbed Nweze Chiebonam in the chest, leading to his death. The victim was rushed to the hospital but was confirmed de@d by doctors. The dagger used in the attack was recovered by police operatives.

The Enugu State Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, extended condolences to the bereaved family, describing the incident as “unfortunate and avoidable.” He urged residents, particularly youths, to shun violence, exercise restraint, and embrace peaceful conflict resolution.
