The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has revealed that the agency is currently investigating 18 serving state governors for alleged corruption-related offences.

Olukoyede made this disclosure during a sensitisation programme held in Lagos on Friday, July 18.

He clarified that although the EFCC does not wait for public officials to complete their tenures before beginning investigations, action is usually taken after they leave office.

“As I speak to you, we are investigating about 18 serving governors,” he said. “When they leave office, we’ll move to the next level.”

Sharing a related incident, Olukoyede narrated how a former governor under EFCC investigation fled to the United Kingdom immediately after his tenure ended to evade arrest.

Coincidentally, during his birthday celebration at a hotel in the UK, he began spraying pound sterling notes in large denominations. This unusual behavior alarmed the hotel staff.

“The hotel manager had never seen such a thing before, so he called emergency services, thinking the man was mentally unstable,” Olukoyede said.

According to him, officers of the Metropolitan Police arrived and attempted to place the ex-governor in an ambulance. It took the intervention of his friends—including two Nigerian governors present at the event—to convince the police that the man was not suffering from a mental health crisis.
