US President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter, faces an indictment issued on Thursday for the alleged illegal purchase of a firearm while under the influence of drugs. This development has added a new layer of scrutiny to his father’s upcoming campaign for re-election next year.

Hunter Biden has been accused of two counts of making false statements in connection to his 2018 gun purchase. These false statements were made on forms that were required for the purchase, where he incorrectly stated that he was not using drugs illegally at the time.

Additionally, a third charge alleges that, based on these false statements, he unlawfully possessed the gun for an 11-day period in October of that year.

If found guilty on all three charges, Biden could potentially face a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison. However, it’s worth noting that these charges are typically not associated with significant jail time in practice.

The Justice Department asserted that when Biden declared he was not an unlawful drug user at the time of purchasing the Colt Cobra revolver, he knowingly provided a false statement.

The indictment was issued just two days following the initiation of an impeachment inquiry against Joe Biden by Congressional Republicans. They alleged that during his tenure as vice president, he derived financial gains from his son’s foreign business involvements.

The firearm-related charges were formally brought forward by David Weiss, a Special Counsel within the Justice Department, who has been conducting investigations into Joe Biden since 2018. These investigations primarily revolve around a range of allegations, predominantly connected to his international business transactions.
