Google: Turn Off Search Filtering for Schools That Reject AI

Google has announced plans to restrict students in schools that prohibit artificial intelligence (AI) tools from accessing its search engine, sparking criticism from education advocates and political leaders.

The technology giant announced on Tuesday, November 3, that Google Search and its AI-powered educational tools will be switched off by default for students using school-managed K-12 accounts unless school administrators explicitly enable them.

The decision comes amid growing calls from communities for stricter restrictions on screen time and AI use in schools, driven by concerns that the technology could negatively affect students’ learning, development and safety.

According to Chris Phillips, Google’s vice president and general manager of education, access to the company’s AI tools — Gemini, Gemini Notebook and Gemini in Classroom — as well as Google Search, will automatically be disabled for K-12 student accounts until school administrators choose to activate them.

Schools that prohibit AI use will also lose access to Google Search, Phillips told The New York Times. Students attempting to use the search engine will instead see a notification from their school indicating that the service is unavailable.

Google clarified in a post on X on Tuesday that schools will have the flexibility to enable any combination of the three services, allowing administrators to activate one, two or all of them based on their policies.

“We believe schools should have control over AI in their classrooms and in providing administrators with controls to help them manage their approach,” Phillips wrote in his blog post.

However, the announcement has already attracted criticism, with concerns that Google could be pressuring schools to adopt its AI products.

In a statement shared on social media, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani accused the technology company of attempting to use its market dominance to push AI tools into public schools.

“No corporation should have the power to dictate how we teach our children. Our public schools exist to serve students, not to grow the profit margins of Big Tech,” Mamdani said.
