An 83-year-old grandmother, Mrs. Uloma Uchechi Sunday, has been re-arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for allegedly possessing methamphetamine and Colorado, barely a year after she was arrested, prosecuted, and convicted for a similar offence.
The octogenarian was arrested on Wednesday, October 7, at her residence in Ite-Uzo, Umuaguma, Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State. According to the NDLEA, quantities of methamphetamine and Colorado were found concealed around her waist and tied with a wrapper.
Her re-arrest followed credible intelligence indicating that she allegedly operated a notorious drug joint where criminal elements suspected of terrorising the community gathered.
In a statement issued by the NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, the agency disclosed that Uloma’s first encounter with the law occurred on May 17, 2025, when operatives arrested her alongside her 32-year-old daughter, Chisom Uchechi, at their residence in the same community.
At the time, the operatives reportedly recovered 50 grams of methamphetamine, 522 grams of skunk, 260 grams of fresh cannabis leaves, and 12 grams of tramadol from them.
Both women pleaded guilty and were sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment, with an option of a ₦200,000 fine each. They reportedly paid the fines and were subsequently released by the court.
According to Babafemi, the elderly woman allegedly returned to the illicit drug trade after her release and expanded her activities by establishing a drug joint where she reportedly accommodated dangerous individuals.
In a separate operation at the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, Rivers State, NDLEA operatives, working in collaboration with the Nigeria Customs Service, arrested a South African woman, Gebashe Sithandiwe Jessie, for allegedly importing 32.74 kilogrammes of cannabis.
The agency said 30 parcels of Thai Loud, a potent strain of cannabis, were discovered concealed in two travelling bags belonging to the suspect.
Babafemi disclosed that the woman had travelled from Thailand through Doha aboard Qatar Airways flight QR1431.
According to the statement, the suspect confessed to having previously trafficked drugs through other African countries and was attempting to expand her route to Port Harcourt when she was arrested.
In another operation at an airport in Lagos, NDLEA operatives intercepted a consolidated cargo shipment from the United Kingdom after it arrived on September 29.
A search of the consignment reportedly uncovered 70 parcels of Colorado, a synthetic cannabinoid weighing 75.90 kilogrammes, concealed inside six Ghana-Must-Go bags.
The agency said a 54-year-old clearing agent, John Edrah, was the first suspect arrested in connection with the shipment on September 30.
Subsequently, Taofiq Ajibola, also 54, an Uber driver, was arrested while allegedly attempting to collect one of the bags at a logistics company in the Mafoluku area of Oshodi, Lagos.
Two other suspects, Adetunji Adebayo and Kazeem Damola Dosunmu, a 48-year-old clothing trader, were also arrested after allegedly arriving to collect the remaining five bags. According to the NDLEA, Ajibola claimed that the drugs had been sent by a UK-based associate identified as Lukman Sa’idu, while Dosunmu reportedly said his consignment came from another UK-based individual identified as Yusuf.
