Lionel Messi has been left at the centre of an injury concern just weeks before the World Cup after medical tests revealed muscle fatigue in his left hamstring, Inter Miami said on Monday.
The Major League Soccer club provided no clear timeline for the Argentine superstar’s return following his early exit from Miami’s 6–4 win over Philadelphia on Sunday. The 38-year-old, who plays for the defending world champions, clutched the back of his left leg in the 73rd minute before requesting to be substituted. He was later seen walking normally as he headed to the dressing room.
“After undergoing further medical tests this Monday, the initial diagnosis indicates an overload associated with muscle fatigue in his left hamstring,” Inter Miami said in a statement. “The timeline for his return to physical activity will depend on his clinical and functional progress.”
The update offers little clarity on the condition of the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner as Argentina prepare to defend their title at the World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico and begins on June 11.
Argentina open their campaign five days later against Algeria in Kansas City.
Messi has carefully managed his workload since joining Inter Miami in 2023, with club staff often resting him during congested fixture periods.
Major League Soccer has already entered a break for the tournament.
Messi has not formally confirmed his participation in the World Cup, though he is widely expected to feature in what would be a record-equalling sixth appearance at the finals.
