IGP orders investigation into disappearance and alleged killing of social critic, Dadiyata

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has directed the Police Monitoring Unit to investigate allegations linking two senior police officers, CSP Hussaini Gimba and CSP Hassan Gimba, to the disappearance and alleged killing of social critic, Abubakar Idris, popularly known as Dadiyata.

Dadiyata, a lecturer and social media activist, was abducted from his home in Barnawa, Kaduna, in August 2019 and has not been seen or heard from since.

The directive followed a series of petitions submitted on Friday, May 8, by Kano-based activist and human rights lawyer, Abba Hikima.

The petitions, addressed to the IGP, referenced claims made by Muhammad Musa Kamarawa, a former Senior Special Assistant to the immediate past Zamfara State governor, Bello Matawalle.

Kamarawa allegedly claimed that the officers threatened him, stating that they had killed Dadiyata and others in his presence at Operations Yaki in Kaduna. In one of the petitions, the law firm handling the matter noted that if the allegations were false, a transparent investigation would clear the officers’ names.

However, it added that if the claims were true, justice must take its course “irrespective of rank, office or influence.”

The petitions also highlighted growing public concern over Dadiyata’s disappearance and called for the constitution of an independent investigative panel.

In response, the IGP, through his Principal Staff Officer, CF Lateef Adio Ahmed, confirmed receipt of the petitions and stated that the matter had been referred to the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Monitoring Unit for immediate action.

The letter assured the petitioners of the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to justice, accountability, and a thorough investigation.
