The Nigerian movie industry is mourning the death of popular actress and director Oby Kechere, widely known for her role as “Ms Koi Koi” in the 2002 classic Aki na Uwa.
The Directors Guild of Nigeria (DGN) confirmed the news in a statement. According to the statement signed by the guild’s Director of Communications, Uche Agu, she passed away on Monday, April 27, 2026, after a prolonged illness.
“It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Madam Cecilia Oby Kechere. On behalf of the National Executive Council and the entire DGN family, I extend my deepest condolences to her family and loved ones,” the statement read in part.
Ms Kechere’s career, which began in the early 2000s, was marked by her versatility as both a performer and a behind-the-scenes professional. Beyond her screen credits, she was widely respected for her commitment to professional ethics and her mentorship within the Abuja filmmaking community.
