No fewer than five people, including two pregnant women, were abducted by bandits during a raid on Maiwa Village in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State on Saturday, March 28.
According to residents, the heavily armed attackers stormed the village on seven motorcycles.
“They met us sitting at the mosque, and before they started shooting into the air, I ran toward police officers. The officers also fled and abandoned their post when they saw two of the bandits pursuing me on motorcycles. After I escaped, the attackers returned, went into houses, and abducted the victims,” a resident told Daily Trust.
The abducted victims were identified as Sadiya Umar, Firdausi Umar, Maryam Musa, Ubaida Musa, and Harira Nura.
A resident added that two of the victims — Sadiya and Ubaida — are heavily pregnant and due to deliver soon. The attackers initially rustled 12 cows but later returned them.
Following the incident, many residents fled to neighbouring Niger Republic but returned on Sunday morning.
The Sokoto State Police Command has yet to comment on the development.
