King Charles III is facing backlash from some British citizens over a remark he made during a State Banquet hosted in honour of Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and his wife, Oluremi Tinubu.

Speaking at the banquet held at St George’s Hall in Windsor Castle, the British monarch said: “Nigeria has long shown that people of different faiths can, do, and must live alongside one another in peace, harmony, and shared purpose.”

That portion of his speech was later shared on X, where it drew criticism from several users.

Tim Dieppe, Head of Public Policy at Christian Concern, questioned the comment, writing: “Does he have no idea of the level of persecution of Christians in Nigeria?”

Another British user, John Bortho, reacted strongly, alleging that Christians are being killed in Nigeria and urging the King, as Defender of the Faith, to take the issue more seriously.

Similarly, David Vance described the monarch’s remarks as “profoundly misguided,” while another user, identified as Huckleberry, accused him of ignoring violence against Christians in Nigeria.

Some Nigerians also weighed in on the post, with one user suggesting that the King may have been reading from a prepared script without full awareness of the situation on the ground.
