Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has raised serious concerns over the growing insecurity in Nigeria, alleging that more than 1,000 Nigerians have been killed within the first two months of 2026.

In a post shared on his X account on Sunday, March 1, Obi said thousands of others were also abducted between January and February. He described the current level of violence as deeply troubling, noting that the situation appears worse than what is seen in some countries officially at war.

According to him, while ordinary Nigerians are battling fear, loss, and uncertainty, many politicians are already consumed with calculations for the 2027 general elections.

Obi criticised what he called a “politics without humanity,” accusing leaders of focusing more on power struggles and election strategies than on the safety and well-being of citizens.

He lamented that from states like Zamfara, Kwara, Ondo, Kebbi, Edo, Benue, Adamawa, and Plateau, reports of attacks, kidnappings, and killings continue to emerge. Families, he said, are burying loved ones, while entire communities are being forced to live in fear.

Obi expressed particular sorrow over recent attacks in Plateau State, where families in the Doruwa Babuje community were seen mourning and burying their dead. He said it was heartbreaking to witness such pain while national conversations remain centred on party politics and zoning arrangements.

“We are planning for 2027 when many Nigerians are struggling to survive 2026,” he noted, stressing that leadership should be about protecting lives, not merely winning elections.

Obi urged political leaders to make human life a top priority, arguing that history will judge leaders not by how well they strategised for elections, but by how they responded when citizens were in danger.

He ended his message with his familiar call for hope, insisting that a better Nigeria is still possible.
