Senate Holds Emergency Plenary on Electoral Act Amendments Amid Protests

The Senate has commenced an emergency plenary session to address contentious amendments to the Electoral Act.

The session was convened following growing protests from Nigerians and civil society groups demanding the inclusion of mandatory real-time electronic transmission of election results.

The emergency sitting comes less than a week after the passage of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, 2026.

President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, is presiding over the session, which is being attended by the remaining senators.
