Controversial clergyman Chukwuemeka Odumeje has shared words of encouragement with singer Davido following his loss at the 2026 Grammy Awards.
The Grammy ceremony, held in Los Angeles, United States, on Sunday, February 1, saw South African star Tyla win the Best African Music Performance award. She beat Nigerian heavyweights Davido, Burna Boy and Ayra Starr in the category.
The outcome disappointed many Nigerians who had hoped Davido would finally clinch the prestigious award.
Reacting to the development during a church service, Odumeje described Davido as a “generational award,” saying the singer’s success and influence go far beyond trophies and formal recognition.
“There is one of our brothers that I love so much — Davido,” Odumeje said. “You are already a generational award. You have received many awards already. There is no award you will receive now that will define you. Your life is an award. Your steps are awards.”
He urged the singer not to allow the Grammy loss affect his confidence or dampen his spirit, encouraging him to remain focused on making music that continues to inspire people across the world.
“Don’t allow ordinary people to quench the fire of your joy,” Odumeje added. “Go out and get more inspiration to shock the world with new music. Don’t go where you are not accepted. You are already on top of the world — the world will come to you.”
Odumeje further warned Davido against allowing criticism or disappointment to weaken his self-belief, stressing that his impact on the global music scene remains solid and undeniable.
Despite missing out on the Grammy, the clergyman maintained that Davido’s legacy, influence and achievements still place him among the most successful African artists of his generation.
