Former Chelsea star Oscar has been diagnosed with vasovagal syncope following his sudden collapse during a São Paulo training session this week.

The 34-year-old Brazilian midfielder was rushed to Einstein Israelite Hospital on Tuesday after fainting at the club’s SuperCT facility.

The incident prompted a thorough medical evaluation, and specialists have now confirmed the diagnosis after conducting controlled procedures to assess his blood pressure and heart rate responses.

In a statement, São Paulo FC confirmed both the diagnosis and the next steps in Oscar’s care, noting that he has remained stable since his admission.

“Midfielder Oscar remains hospitalized at the Einstein Israelite Hospital, where he was admitted on Tuesday afternoon (11) after presenting an incident with cardiological changes during tests carried out at SuperCT,” the club said.

“An extensive investigation carried out at the hospital confirmed the diagnosis of vasovagal syncope. Oscar remains clinically well and stable, hospitalized in a cardiology unit, and will undergo an electrophysiological study this Friday.”

Specialists quoted by Brazilian outlet Globo explained that vasovagal syncope can be managed through medication or a minor procedure to cauterize a node responsible for sudden drops in blood pressure. They emphasized that the condition is not considered life-threatening when properly treated.

Earlier reports indicated that Oscar had been taking medication for a heart condition since August, and that his family had encouraged him to prioritize his long-term health when considering his next steps.

Additional reporting in Brazil suggested that the midfielder had been weighing the possibility of retirement, with local outlets claiming that São Paulo were open to terminating his contract amicably if he chose to end his career.

Oscar returned to his boyhood club last December after eight years with Shanghai Port in China, where he earned £150 million.
