Veteran Nigerian comedian Alibaba has spoken openly about his views on polygamy, describing it as a practice with both cultural and practical value in certain societies.

In a recent interview with media personality Nedu, Alibaba argued that polygamy can promote harmony in the home and even prevent conflict.

“Some people feel if it’s only one wife, you may not be able to control the wife,” he said.
“But if the wife knows that you have more than one, she will calm down because she knows that if she misbehaves, another person is available.”

He also referred to cultural traditions in places like Ibadan, where, historically, women sometimes encouraged their husbands to take additional wives. According to Alibaba, this was done not out of jealousy, but as a way to prevent infidelity and maintain family unity.

“I actually know of a woman in Ibadan who encouraged her husband to be a polygamist,” he said.
“Most of them back then would marry a young girl and gift her to the husband because they didn’t want the man to have concubines.”

Alibaba further explained that in some traditional settings, polygamy served social and protective purposes — such as when a widow with young children would be married to her late husband’s brother, ensuring the children were cared for within the family.

While acknowledging that polygamy is not universally accepted, Alibaba maintained that it remains relevant in some cultural and practical contexts, especially where the goal is to preserve family structure or avoid societal issues like infidelity.

“It may not work for everyone,” he admitted, “but in some cases, it has real value.”
