Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has issued a strong warning to opposition leaders across Nigeria: unite or risk President Bola Tinubu entrenching himself in power beyond 2027.

Speaking during a solidarity visit from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar at his residence on Saturday, September 20, El-Rufai alleged that President Tinubu is showing early signs of attempting to remain in power indefinitely — likening him to Cameroon’s long-standing ruler, Paul Biya.

“Honestly, to me, it’s a disgrace for people to behave the way they like,” El-Rufai said. “It means all those years of preaching democracy and federalism under NADECO were just for show. Everything they claimed to stand for is being reversed.”

He criticized the Tinubu administration for allegedly moving toward greater centralization of power, contrary to earlier promises of restructuring and true federalism.

“This government is trying to centralize everything instead of devolving power. We’re facing a threat of historic proportions in this country,” he warned. “If we don’t come together and put an end to the Tinubu administration in 2027, he’ll try to become our version of Paul Biya — a president for life. All the signs are there. That’s exactly how it starts.”

El-Rufai’s comments have added fuel to the already growing tensions among opposition blocs, many of whom have been calling for a united front ahead of the 2027 general elections.
