Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday, September 15, that he is suing The New York Times for $15 billion, accusing the newspaper of defamation and libel.

Posting on his Truth Social platform, Trump declared, “The New York Times has been allowed to freely lie, smear, and defame me for far too long, and that stops, NOW!” He added that the lawsuit is being filed in Florida.

Trump called The New York Times a “virtual mouthpiece for the Radical Left Democrat Party,” accusing the paper of spreading falsehoods about his family, business, the America First Movement, MAGA, and the nation—though he did not provide evidence to back these claims.

This legal action follows recent reports by The New York Times involving a lewd birthday note allegedly given to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Trump has denied ever writing the note.

In a related string of legal battles, Trump also sued media mogul Rupert Murdoch and The Wall Street Journal in July for at least $10 billion over an article about his friendship with Epstein. That same month, he reached a $16 million settlement with Paramount over a lawsuit regarding CBS News’ 60 Minutes coverage of the 2024 election. Trump had alleged the program deceptively edited an interview with his election rival Kamala Harris.
