Suspected bandits have attacked communities in Giwa and Kubau Local Government Areas of Kaduna State, killing five people, including three personnel of the Kaduna State Vigilance Service (KadVS), and abducting 27 others, including the younger brother of a serving state lawmaker.
The spokesperson for KadVS, Yunusa Shehu, confirmed the incidents to newsmen, saying the attackers invaded several communities in separate incidents.
According to Shehu, two people were killed in attacks on Tunburku, Tudun Amada and Kallon Kura communities in Giwa, while three KadVS personnel were killed in Kubau. The attackers also reportedly rustled cattle belonging to residents.
Shehu said the bandits simultaneously attacked Tunburku in Kidandan District and Tudun Amada in Kadage District in the early hours of Monday.
He identified the two people killed in Tunburku as Surajo and Ado, while 26 residents were abducted in Tudun Amada.
Another resident, identified as Ayyuba Usman, sustained injuries during the attack.
Shehu said that in a separate incident, the bandits invaded Kura community in Danmahawayi District at about 9 p.m. on Saturday and rustled cattle belonging to residents.
He added that the attackers also invaded Kallon Kura in Danmahawayi District during the night and began moving the stolen cattle before security personnel mobilised to the area.
According to Shehu, KadVS personnel, acting on intelligence about the movement of the bandits, mobilised to track the attackers and recover the animals.
He said the personnel engaged the bandits in a gun battle, forcing the attackers to retreat and abandon the cattle before fleeing the area.
A security source who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) said the security operatives subsequently recovered 19 cattle from the bandits at about midnight on Saturday.
Lawmaker’s Brother Abducted
Shehu also said bandits abducted the younger brother of a member of the Kaduna State House of Assembly in Kubau, where three KadVS personnel were killed.
He said the abduction occurred a few hours after the KadVS personnel were killed along the Zaria-Pambegua axis.
The victim was identified as Sanusi, the younger brother of Shehu Pambegua, who represents the Kubau constituency in the Kaduna State House of Assembly.
According to Shehu, Sanusi was abducted from his residence at about 10 p.m. on Monday after the bandits reportedly arrived in a Sharon vehicle and invaded the property.
Three KadVS Personnel Killed
Shehu identified the slain KadVS personnel as Dallami Dantani, the second-in-command of KadVS in Kubau; Abdullahi Hamisu; and Zakariyya Musa.
He said the personnel were conducting routine security checks when they attempted to stop a red Volkswagen Golf sedan.
When the driver refused to stop, the officers pursued the vehicle in an official patrol van to establish the identities of its occupants and determine their purpose of movement.
Shehu said the suspects opened fire during the chase, killing Dantani.
He added that the attackers subsequently turned back towards the KadVS office, where they fatally shot Hamisu and Musa before fleeing towards Zaria.
